The thriving Town of Hempstead

Hempstead is a dynamic community located in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. Considered America’s largest township at just over 700,000 residents, Hempstead is home to 22 villages and 37 hamlets, all offering their own distinct culture and style. The area was first settled in 1644 and remained sparsely populated until right after World War II.

Situated just 20 miles east of New York City, Hempstead is a popular place to live among commuters and those who like the proximity of the city and all its excitement. With its extensive public transit system, Hempstead residents and visitors can easily get in and out of the metro area for both work and play.

Major employers in the area include Lufthansa and Swiss International Air Lines, which have their United States headquarters in the Hempstead hamlet of East Meadow. Hempstead is home to a number of parks and recreation areas, including Hempstead Lake State Park, Valley Stream State Park, and Jones Beach State Park.

Also of note is the conversion of a former landfill to the Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve. The Levy Park & Preserve is located alongside the Meadowbrook Parkway. The 52-acre site offers a kayak launch into the original Meadow Brook, three miles of hiking and jogging trails with 18 exercise stations along the trails, and a 500-foot fishing pier into Merrick Bay. It also features tremendous views of the Jones Beach Tower, the New York City skyline and numerous coastal treasures. Hempstead also offers Baldwin Skate Park, a facility for inline skaters and skateboarders located in Baldwin Park.

There are more than twenty-five museums and historical sites located in Hempstead. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, a state-of-the-art facility with a collection of more than 70 aircraft and spacecraft, immerses visitors in the history of aviation. Historical societies capture the area’s history with ever-changing displays. There are also a number of golf courses, shopping areas, sports teams, and Hempstead is also the home of the Belmont Stakes.

And of course there’s the famous Jones Beach, where you can stroll the boardwalk, bask in the sun or take a dip in the ocean. From paddleball and shuffleboard to volleyball and basketball, Jones Beach offers something for everyone.
